Basement Insulation

Basement Insulation

The Earth is one of the best insulating resources we have, however, because of the way that heat flows, the basement can be one of the largest sources of heat loss in the home. Basement insulation companies have made leaps and bounds in delivering greener, healthier solutions to basement insulation.

In a finished basement the walls should lay between 1-2 inches away from the foundation wall. Behind these basement walls there should be a vapor barrier. Different parts of the United States require different thicknesses, so check with your building inspector to find the perfect match. This vapor barrier should be tied into a drainage system to protect your finished area from leaks and moisture seepage. This will protect your basement from building up humidity in the summer and loss of heat during the winter.

There are a variety of vapor barriers to choose from including a reflective surface vapor barrier that helps to reflect the heat traveling to the foundation walls, back through the insulation, and into the basement space.

Saving Energy Insulating your Basement

Insulation of all kinds, losesĀ their efficiency when it comes into contact with moisture and water directly. The reflective barrier protects the batting, or rigid insulation, from that while, at the same time, reflecting the heat back through the insulation.

These reflective surface vapor barriers help to catch the lost heat from an R-9 or R-13 rated insulation and passes it back into the basement. A typical reflective vapor barrier can help increase the R rating by 1-2% at best. This may not sound like a bunch, but it is working double duty and creating a last line of defense against heat loss through the foundation walls. Your finished area will be well protected, your insulation will work more effectively and efficiently (being able to use all the heat rather than losing a fraction) which will help to lower your energy costs.

Basement Remodeling Ideas

Basement Remodeling is a great way to increase the living area in your home. And unlike adding an addition onto your home, ground/site work and installing a new foundation are not required. Consequently a basement renovation project can be a much more affordable project to do and provide a much higher return on investment.

Basement Energy EPA

According to the EPA and the Energy Start program, the addition of a vapor barrier to a basement insulation project could be considered for the 2009-2010 energy home improvement tax in the U.S. (under the category of "insulation"). The final numbers are notĀ out yet on if the IRS will be allowing this addition (standard insulation is already accepted in the Tax Credit guidelines), but simply following the Tax Credit information will allow you to keep up to date on what would count towards the 2009-2010 Energy Tax Credit.

As the homeowner you could potentially see a savings, not only in your energy bill monthly, but also receive money back from the government by insulating your basement properly. Basement waterproofing companies typically have a style of reflective vapor barrier that you could choose from and a Insulation company or Finishing Contractor would have options available to them to help you choose a green basement insulation or standard fiberglass insulation that's right for your basement.

Basement Design Plans

Basement plans are important to draw up before starting any type of construction or remodeling of your basement. They can serve as a great guide while you are working on your basement. Some people may have room to put only a few items in the basement, but there are some who have been blessed with a spacious basement.

Basement Windows

For one, basements are often stuffy and feel close or crowded. Ventilation is important to basements in order to make them a livable area. Basement windows play a big part in ventilation; just because they may not let much usable light in, they provide another valuable service.
