Five Steps to Building a Flower Garden

With the seasons changing, it’s that time of year to plan for a new garden bed or rejuvenate your existing patch.  Home Improvement and Repair has some simple pointers to help you plan and bring beauty to your home-garden by joining flowering shrubs and flowering trees; an appealing mixing blend for your flower garden.  Break out the kid’s Crayola Crayons and begin making your flower garden plans by drawing out how you imagine your garden looking when done and plan the design, layout, and color scheme before you buy plants.

Begin your flower garden design with a focal point.  The most attractive flower beds have accents that highlight the garden and immediately catch your eye; such as an arbor, garden fountain, waterfall, or statue.   The most in style garden delight has the right accessories to set the mood you’re trying to achieve.

Step 2 - Garden Borders and Edges

Your flower garden bed should be separated from the rest of the garden using smooth sweeping curves or straight lines.  Straight lines are easier to maintain, but recent trends have found straight lined gardens dull and use gently curving edges to give the garden a longer perception.  Before you create your garden shape, mark the edge with landscape paint and leave it for several days to ensure you’re able to do yard maintenance around it.   Keep in mind, two to three foot-wide borders is ideal to allow sufficient airflow and access for gardening maintenance.

Step 3 - Garden Soil Mixture

Research your plant’s soil needs before you begin.  With most plants you need drained soil and won’t survive in swampy soil conditions.  With this in mind, keep your flower garden away from areas that have standing water after a rainfall or during spring frost.  Ideally you want to prepare your soil two seasons in advance before you begin planting.

Step 4 - Garden Flower Placement

Before you start digging, design your flower garden and decide which plants go where in your beds.  We recommend arranging smaller plants in the front, especially if being viewed from a window.  However, if you’re going for a garden island bed, center the tall plants and keep smaller plants near the edges.  For traditional gardens, your taller plants should be less than two-thirds the width of the bed and half the width for island gardens.  Keep in mind that certain types of plants flower better in sun than others, so try to keep these in the front of the garden and out the shade.  Most plants need six or more hours of sun each day while others won’t do well in full day sunlight.

Step 5 - Harmony in Color

Replicating plants, colors, and textures bring harmony to your flower garden.  Plant groups of flower types next to others with complimenting colors.  More is definitely better.  Plant the same species of flowers in a group, clustering them in drifts of five or more.  Bring your flower bed permanence by repeating plants and color patterns.  Choose plants that offer your garden color throughout all seasons.  In the spring, flowering bulbs are ideal for initial color.  While you’re planning, log when you each species will bloom and don’t forget about winter interest, as this is often neglected in flower garden designs.  Behind the flowers and near the focal point, plant something with a solid backdrop, such as an evergreen hedge, taller annuals, and perennials to distinguish the bright color of the flowers and bring visual contrast to the plants.  But always remember to keep symmetry with larger plants in the flower garden.

Japanese Garden Design Ideas

home-garden-buy-garden-furniture-onlineJapanese gardening is much different from the Western style garden. Most would say that a Japanese garden is far more soul soothing and inspires meditation. Japanese gardening is a cultural form of gardening that is meant to produce a scene that mimics nature as much as possible. Using trees, shrubs, rocks, sand, artificial hills, ponds, and flowing water the garden becomes an art form.
